Common Misconceptions About LASIK

Myth #1: LASIK causes night vision problems.

In the early days of LASIK, many people experienced vision characteristics such as ‘starbuAuto_Halos_revised1.jpgrsts’ or ‘halos’, especially at night. This was mainly caused by the deficiencies of the early lasers used in the procedure.

Davis Eye Center uses only the most advanced lasers so that our patients won’t have this experience. In fact, our lasers are so advanced that many of our patients have experienced enhanced night vision over the vision they experienced with glasses and contacts.

Dr. Davis considers using outdated technology inexcusable. It is certainly cheaper for the LASIK center but definitely not better for the patient.

Myth #2: I have astigmatism so I cannot have LASIK.

Many patients have been told by their Optometrist that they cannot have LASIK because they have astigmatism. This is simply not true.

Astigmatism happens because the cornea is shaped more like a football instead of being perfectly round. The laser used during LASIK will reshape the cornea in a similar way that it would for nearsightedness and farsightedness.

Myth #3: LASIK won’t last, so it’s really not worth it.

Some LASIK surgeons will perform LASIK on anyone that wants to have it, even people that may not be good candidates. This could cause a patient to experience undesirable results from LASIK.

At Davis Eye Center, we ensure that all of our potential LASIK patients receive a thorough LASIK consultation before our doctors will recommend that they have the procedure. We examine many factors, such as age, eye health, thickness of your cornea, etc. to ensure that each patient is an excellent candidate. If it is found that you are not a good candidate, we do offer a variety of other procedures that will help you achieve your vision goals.

The refractive errors corrected by LASIK stay corrected for the rest of your life. Since the cornea is living tissue there can be minor fluctuations and occasionally the need for enhancements following the procedure as the cornea adapts to the changes. These are a normal part of the post-operative process. You can also be confident in your decision to have LASIK because of our Lifetime VIP Enhancement Program.

Your eyes age as you do, and for most of us who’ve reached 40, another element of the eye will cause vision trouble – especially creating the need for reading glasses. This element is the eye’s lens, which gradually loses flexibility and results in a condition called presbyopia, or the need for reading glasses. There is a procedure called Monovision LASIK that can help this condition significantly, giving many people the ability to see well up close as well as mid range and far away.

By the time you are in your 70s most people will be experiencing another age-related vision problems called cataracts which LASIK does not address. However, depending on the age at which you have your procedure, most people can expect decades of excellent vision free of the effects of refractive error.
