Cataracts

Just like everything else in the body, our eyes change with age. Typically, starting around the age of 50, the lens of your eye can slowly start to develop a cataract. Even if your eye doesn’t change in appearance, cataracts will affect just about everyone. It’s just a matter of when.

Studies show that cataracts affect:

  • 42% of those between the ages of 52 to 64
  • 60% of those between the ages 65 and 74
  • 91% of those between the ages of 75 and 85

In the early stages of cataracts you may not notice much of a change in your vision. For some people, it may be years before the effects are fully recognizable. Left untreated, cataracts can eventually blind a person. In fact 48% of the world’s blindness can be attributed to cataracts – or 18 million people, according to the World Health Organization.
